It won’t be long before we start doing our snow dances in earnest. This fall, take a drive, hike, or bike ride around and you’ll see bursts of yellow and gold throughout Lake Tahoe’s South Shore.

Please remember to recreate responsibly.

Some recommended spots for fall colors:

Taylor Creek Visitor Center

A paved path winds through the meadow and forest along Taylor Creek, featuring interpretive signs and a visitor information center to help educate as well as inspire. Bonus: The annual fall migration of the Kokanee salmon takes place beginning early October.  From South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 89 north approximately 3 miles. Turn right at the Visitor Center entrance just past the Tallac Historic Site.

Lam Watah Trail/Rabe Meadow

This has become my go-to trail for a lunchtime dog walk or a pre-work morning run. The paved bike path offers easy access, and the network of dirt trails provides fun options to explore the area. Pack a picnic, take a long walk through the trees to the Nevada Beach shoreline. From South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 50 east toward Stateline approximately 5 miles. Turn left on Kahle drive and then park in the lot on the right.

Hope Valley

Whether you make this an afternoon drive or a day-long hike, the Hope Valley area provides some of the best fall foliage around. Drive From South Lake Tahoe, take Highway 50 toward Echo Summit approximately 5 miles. Turn left at Highway 89 south and continue over Luther Pass to Pickett’s Junction approximately 10 miles.

Spooner Lake

The 2.5-mile loop around the lake may be better presented as a nature walk. Many informational signs dot the path, and there is an abundance of waterfowl and wildflowers in the springtime. In the fall, watch out for falling pinecones from the copious lodgepole pines. From the main parking lot, simply follow signs for Spooner Lake. Once you reach the lake, the trail will be fairly self-explanatory. Make your way around the lake, taking breaks to enjoy the flora and fauna along the waters edge. Don’t expect much elevation change, as this hike is almost entirely flat.

Fallen Leaf Lake

For a scenic drive, take Highway 50 and explore the stunning golden Aspen trees along the route, or venture along Highway 89 to visit Fallen Leaf Lake and Emerald Bay State Park.

Whole Foods can provide a take-and-bake Thanksgiving meal that’s scrumptious AND healthy for those wanting to stay in. For a fully catered meal with all the fixings, Cork & More will fit the bill. The Lake Tahoe Chart House has Prime Rib or Turkey family meals available to pick up hot on Thanksgiving and they have Thanksgiving options at the restaurant.

Where to Stay in Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving

As we’ve talked about earlier, November is a great time to visit for those who want to experience the area on their own terms. A handful of ski resorts have begun turning on their lifts, regardless of what Mother Nature says. And at the lower elevations, you can still enjoy a hike. So, we’re here to help answer the question of where to stay in Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving.

South Lake Tahoe – Fun For All

Thanksgiving is all about family fun when you come to South Lake Tahoe. Want to go skiing? Heavenly and its panoramic views of the lake are right at your doorstep for some early-season thrills. Looking to lace up some skates? The ice skating rinks in the Heavenly Village and Edgewood Tahoe Resort are waiting for you to lutz and loop to your heart’s content. Don’t let the talk of snow and ice fool you though, there are still plenty of trails and miles of beaches to enjoy.

Here are our top suggestions of where to stay for Turkey Day.

Spanning two states, California and Nevada, South Tahoe is home to world-class casinos that are all within walking distance of fun times. After an epic day on the slopes, try your luck at the casino gaming tables or revel in a neon nightclub where the party doesn’t stop till you drop.

Lake Tahoe is a destination where adventure and entertainment reign supreme. As such, South Lake Tahoe hotels range from rustic mountain lodges to beachside retreats. Many Tahoe hotels offer family-friendly accommodations, such as heated pools and beach access, all within walking distance of Heavenly Village. If you prefer a little mountain seclusion, Tahoe’s south shore boasts an array of hotel resorts with spas, hot tubs, and easy access to hiking trails, secret beaches, and powdered ski slopes.

Looking for more options? Between cabins, resorts, and plenty of bed & breakfasts, your choices of where to stay are plentiful.

Happy Holidays!

There’s no season quite like autumn around Lake Tahoe’s south shore. A time of ever-changing beauty, the fall months are a perfect time to recharge or let loose, all while taking in the incredible sights, smells, and sounds that Big Blue delivers.

Couples can easily make memories to last forever around South Lake Tahoe, with a tolerant and inclusive community, miles of beaches, and a lifetime’s worth of trails to explore.

Day One

Welcome to South Lake Tahoe!

From the deep blue waters of the lake to the sea of emerald pine trees, all the way up to towering granite peaks, take a minute to soak up the incredible sights of Lake Tahoe. Take in a few big breaths of crisp, cool mountain air and smell the scent of pine trees that lingers throughout the area. You’ve made it!

Deciding where to stay in Lake Tahoe helps set the vibe of your vacation. South Lake Tahoe lodging options are as varied as the landscape itself, but one thing they all have in common is a door that opens to either serenity or adventure. Looking for a rustic cabin in the mountains? Or perhaps a luxury resort close to the beach? If you’re searching for the perfect place to stay, we’ve got you covered.

Looking to pair an incredible view with delectable food? South Lake Tahoe offers a variety of lake view dining options to let you get right into the heart of your getaway. Towering windows at Edgewood Restaurant frame Tahoe’s picture-perfect vistas while tables frame enticing cuisine. Romantic views are elevated, literally, at the Chart House Lake View Restaurant. High on the mountain separating Lake Tahoe from the Carson Valley, the Chart House’s immaculate view of Lake Tahoe and the mountains can only be matched by the sumptuous steaks and seafood dishes you are sure to find.

After a well-deserved meal, it’s time to get out and explore Tahoe’s miles of trails by foot or by bike. You don’t have to spend a lot of time or walk very far to find incredible views, though. There are plenty of quick treks with high rewards!

A backpacking couple looking over the lake and mountains. Photo by Brian Walker.

It’s almost time to get out onto the water, but first, let’s test your luck at a table inside one of South Lake Tahoe’s casinos.

Some of the most memorable moments of your trip can be found on the deck of a Lake Tahoe boat tour. The M.S. Dixie II, Rum Runner Cruise, Tahoe Bleu Wave, Serenity Yacht, and much more are waiting to set sail for adventure with you onboard. Some boat tours also offer dinner, so be sure to take advantage of that if you’re hungry from the fun of the day.

Two women eating on the M.S. Dixie II

Don’t let the sun set on your first night without busting some of your best dance moves at the hyper-modern and uber-chic, Opal Ultra Lounge inside Bally’s Lake Tahoe. Let their DJs bring you to your feet and dance into the wee hours.

Day Two

You’re halfway through your two-day stay, but there’s still plenty to do! Fill up for the day at Red Hut Cafe. Try the popular biscuits and gravy or enjoy a fluffy omelet with fresh fixings of your choosing. In the mood for a bagel? Stop by Tahoe Bagel Company for (possibly) the best bagel you’ll ever eat.

It’s time to peep the beautiful fall colors of Lake Tahoe, and the secluded Hope Valley is just the place to see the best fall foliage around. To get there, drive from South Lake Tahoe on Highway 50 toward Echo Summit for approximately 5 miles and turn left at Highway 89 south. Continue over Luther Pass to Pickett’s Junction, and you’ll be there!

With leaf peepin’ out of the way, it’s time for some lunch before getting back to town, and there’s nothing like perfectly prepared authentic Thai cuisine. My Thai Restaurant’s specialty spicy chicken is definitely worth a try!

With the trip almost at an end, it’s time to saddle up on a horse and get back onto the trails. Lake Tahoe stables provide the unique experience of sitting six feet off the ground on a sturdy steed that gently ambles along select pathways and allows you to focus your attention on the sun glistening on damp meadow grass and the fleeting beauty of Tahoe’s changing seasons.

Some fun in the saddle. Photo by @sarahrdrill.

No trip to Lake Tahoe is truly complete without at least dipping your toes into the cold, clean water. While fall isn’t exactly prime swimming season, there is still plenty of daylight for a trip to one of Tahoe’s many pristine beaches for those looking to test the waters or catch an early Tahoe sunset.

You’ve already tasted some of the best food that South Lake Tahoe has to offer, but now it is time for some comfort food before solemnly packing your bags and mentally preparing yourself to leave this beautiful place. Order a pizza or stop by one of our favorite burger joints for one last taste of Tahoe.

Ready to extend your trip? You’ve only scratched the surface of all that there is to do and see during fall around Lake Tahoe’s south shore, and there’s plenty more to discover (and re-discover)! Share your trip with us by using the hashtag #VisitLakeTahoe on your next trip!

Time flies when you’re having fun, we guess. Here on the South Shore of Lake Tahoe the seasons are changing in spectacular fashion and the signs of autumn all around. Nights are cooler, the days are shorter, and our sunsets are still unforgettable. Check out our top picks for activities and things to do in Lake Tahoe in October!

With 9 months down, check out how October in Lake Tahoe keeps the good times rolling into the rest of the year. There is never a bad season to visit!

Peep the Fall Colors of Lake Tahoe in October

Fall Colors Around Lake Tahoe. Photo by Rachid Dahnoun

Fall is, of course, the best time to experience the colorful foliage as aspen leaves take on fiery hues. Not just the trees, but various flowers and other plants will turn from their summer shades and take on vibrant new colors before making their final descent to the ground. We’re just starting to see changes now with much more to come in the next couple of weeks.

Hiking around is a preferable way to do some leaf-peeping, and there is no lack of easily accessible trails that offer stunning autumn views. The Lam Watah Nature Trail features a large meadow with beautiful flowers and is good for all skill levels. There are plenty of trails open though, so don’t stop at just one!

When are the South Lake Tahoe Ski Resorts Opening in 2024?

Dust off your boots, wax your skis or board and sharpen your edges. In just a few short weeks, the snow will start falling and accumulating in the mountains around the Tahoe Basin, which means one thing – Lake Tahoe Ski Resort’s opening dates for 2024 are right around the corner.

While the dates are dependent on snowfall and the weather, the resorts will shortly be creating snow to get the process started. The ski season around Lake Tahoe usually starts in mid-November and can remain open through April or even as late as July depending on the snowpack.

We know you’re excited to get on the snow for the first time in, well, a looong time, but remember that you probably haven’t used those muscles in a few months. Take precautions to prevent injury this South Lake Tahoe ski season. There’s no sense in sabotaging the snow season because you didn’t want to take the time to stretch.

Here’s a quick look at the projected opening dates for South Lake Tahoe ski resorts:

Note: All pre-season “stoke” aside, resorts’ opening dates are subject to actual weather conditions. Keep up your snow dances, and pray for snow!

The Lake Tahoe Ski Season 2024 is Almost Here

skier charging down the mountain on opening day

Sometimes, you just have to strap a snowboard to your feet and send yourself down a snow-covered mountain.

At Lake Tahoe, we are happy to oblige your quest for winter adrenaline rushes. And with 40 feet of snow and 300 days of sun a year, conditions are optimal for your winter skiing or snowboarding trip.

We’ve got world-class ski resorts and acres of backcountry trails, so you can glide down groomed slopes or take a cross-country tour of the winter woods.

Oh, and aprés-ski? None of this lounging-sedately-with-hot-chocolate stuff—in South Lake Tahoe, you can cap off your day on the slopes with a night on the town.

With nightclubs that are going strong in the wee hours, you may not get much chance to rest those tired legs. That’s just how we roll. With endless winter activities in Lake Tahoe, the biggest problem you’ll have is deciding what’s next.

If you are still in Lake Tahoe, congratulations – you’ve just about made it through another hectic summer season. If you are just visiting now, you must be a seasoned traveler, and you’ve made the wise choice to visit during September, aka the best time of year in Tahoe. As fall approaches and summer fades away, Lake Tahoe keeps the fun rolling.

Family Fun Boating Lake Lake Tahoe Shore

Although the nights are cooling off, the days are still plenty hot for all your outdoor lake activities. The kids are back in school, the bros and broettes have flocked back to their frats, and the seasonal influx of tourists has started to dwindle down with the exit of our Burning Man drifters. The town is quieter (if only for a month or two) but never too quiet, summer’s hustle ‘n bustle is shifting to fall festivities. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t mind sharing our home with the many visitors eager for some Tahoe time, but we will gladly enjoy these last weeks of summer heading into fall with a bit less traffic. Our businesses and local organizations have prepared for an eventful month. Make sure you get out and take advantage of it all while you can.

Be a Next Level Visitor

No matter what you decide to do around Lake Tahoe’s south shore, be sure to leave everything you brought with you and properly dispose of it. Some trash areas may be full, so plan to dispose of your waste when you return to where you’re staying.

You could even be a next-level steward and pick up a few pieces of discarded trash while you’re there. Cleaning up a few small pieces of plastic or bringing an extra dog waste bag can go a long way toward protecting Lake Tahoe’s wildlife, clear water, and breathtaking views.

Combine A Hike With Some Friendly Competition… 4 Disc Golf Courses To Check Out In Lake Tahoe

Lake Tahoe is very fortunate that as its winter snows recede, the temperatures soar in the spring, summer, and fall months to near-perfect levels for ANY type of outdoor activity. From world-class singletrack bike trails to miles of beaches, the list of adventures during this time of year is almost endless. One that’s a bit off the radar but well worth a “look-see” if you’re in Lake Tahoe is disc golf. Combining a hike with friendly competition, these four disc golf courses in Lake Tahoe will leave a lasting impression on your time here.

What is Disc Golf?

Before we jump into the courses, let’s give a little run-down on the sport of disc golf. It’s played much like traditional golf in terms of rules, scoring, and etiquette. Where it differs a bit is by throwing specialized discs from the tee box and eventually aiming into a chain-catching metal basket. Another great aspect of the sport is it’s relatively cheap. Once you pick up a set of discs for around 40 bucks, you can play at any of the courses in Lake Tahoe for FREE.

Bijou Community Park

For 1st timers or those that don’t have a lot of time, we recommend venturing over to Bijou Community Park. Centrally located off of Al Tahoe Boulevard, it features a playground, vast bike park, dog park, skate park, and a 27-hole disc golf course. Overall, the course is mostly flat with a few elevation changes as it winds its way through meadows and pine trees. For beginners, the first nine are a perfect option since they’re a bit shorter, helping to build confidence. The last eighteen are more of a challenge.

Zephyr Cove Park

Zephyr Cove Disc Golf at Lake Tahoe

On the other side of town, just a few minutes past the casino corridor is Zephyr Cove Park. This eighteen-hole course starts under a canopy of pines and slowly ascends up a massive hillside. Around the seventh hole, the forest begins to give way to manzanita vegetation, adding a bit more challenge to find your thrown discs. Be sure to persevere because the next set of holes, especially eleventh’s tee box, offer some of the most majestic views you’ll find on a disc golf course. Due to its steep rolling terrain, after a round you’ll feel like you accomplished not just a game of disc golf but a hiking adventure to boot.

Tahoe Paradise Disc Golf

Tahoe Paradise Disc Golff

The disc golf course at Tahoe Paradise Park features nine holes of all-around fun. The beginner-friendly course invites players to step away from the public park and up on the pad and give it their best throw. The course begins along a playground but quickly takes players near Lake Baron’s shores and through varying terrain, with trees and granite boulders used as natural features throughout.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort

Typically, skiers and snowboarders haunt this powder mecca. But in the summer, just below the Timber Creek Express, experienced disc golfers attempt their skills on this unique high elevation course. Considered one of most challenging courses in the West, it weaves its way through mountainous terrain, meadows, and even a few creeks. Truly an expedition, this course isn’t for beginners or those that aren’t in good physical condition. A normal round can take up to THREE hours, so be prepared.

Turtle Rock Campground

Turtle Rock Disc Golf Course Markleville, CA

While Kirkwood’s course is in the high alpine, the Turtle Rock course just outside of Markleeville is on the cusp of a high desert/alpine environment. Offering up a mix of widely spaced ponderosas, boulder fields, and lots of manzanita bushes, after Kirkwood, this course is the second most challenging. The layout is well organized and includes multiple par 4s and 5s to test the length of your drives. And after the long hike, you can finish it off with a dip at the Grover Hot Springs. Talk about a perfect day out in the mountains!

If you’re looking for a different adventure that doesn’t cost a lot, includes some exercise, and a bit of competition, look no further than disc golf in Lake Tahoe. We guarantee you’ll have a blast!

Disc Golf Throwing Basics

Minimizing Your Impact

When played right, disc golf has a fairly low environmental impact. Doing your best to avoid stepping on native plants and packing out your trash is a great way to show respect for our wildlife and the volunteers who keep our courses looking so good. You may be spending a good chunk of time looking for your frisbee, so feel free to grab a few discarded pieces of rubbish while you’re looking.

From the Course to the Table

After the last disc hits the basket, it’s time to move the party from the forest to town. Lake Tahoe has unique restaurants and bars to help you wind down before another day in the sun or keep the party going all night.
